Program Overview

The Health Informatics and Analytics (HIAN) program offers a Professional Science Master’s program leading to the M.S. degree and a Graduate Certificate, and contributes to other campus programs, including Early Entry and Dual Degree programs.

Mission

The Health Informatics and Analytics program leverages its position within the University’s Data Science Initiative and capitalizes on the strength of its parent colleges, the College of Health and Human Services and the College of Computing and Informatics, to prepare national and international students to advance the professional practice of health informatics through a thorough grounding in data science, system architecture, and health analytics.

This mission is pursued through education, research, and service efforts that:

  • Provide qualified and motivated students from a variety of disciplines, levels of experience, and backgrounds - with a special emphasis on individuals and groups historically underrepresented in graduate education - the knowledge, skills, and abilities to become exemplary practitioners of and advocates for health informatics;
  • Contribute to the body of knowledge related to the design, operation, and analysis of healthcare information systems; and
  • Apply expertise to support health leaders and the communities they serve in, advancing the public’s health.

Vision

The Health Informatics and Analytics program is the nation’s premier program in developing practitioners who bridge data sciences and analytics in support of optimal population health.

The Health Informatics and Analytics program delivers foundational and core competencies in population health management, health data analytics, and the secure exchange of information between clinicians and patients. Graduates of the program are adept at dissecting and interpreting raw data; discovering innovative ways to help companies solve complex business problems, identify opportunities, and efficiencies. Our program is designed for working professionals with courses in the evening and part-time and full-time options available. The program has two starting point options, the Graduate Certificate or the Master’s degree. The Graduate Certificate can be pursued as a stand-alone credential, or folded into the Master’s degree.

Program Governance

Consistent with its interdisciplinary structure, the Health Informatics and Analytics Program is led by its program director who is supported by a faculty committee drawn from its parent colleges, the College of Health and Human Services and the College of Computing and Informatics.

The program is further supported by the Health Informatics and Analytics Advisory Board which is comprised of practitioner leaders drawn from organizations having a vested interested in workforce development and industry needs related to health informatics and analytics. 

Program Overviews

Health Informatics and Analytics courses are designated with the HCIP prefix. Students also typically draw on courses labeled HADM (Health Administration), DSBA (Data Science Business Analytics), and HLTH (Public Health Sciences).

DUAL DEGREES

The Health Informatics and Analytics Master program has two established dual degree programs. Students who wish to pursue a dual degree must be accepted into each program separately. Both programs’ admissions committees will review applicants to the dual program. Ad Hoc dual degree combinations also are possible consistent with graduate school policies.

Transfer Credits

Up to six hours of approved coursework may be transferred to satisfy the Master degree requirements. Only courses in which the student earned a grade of B or better will be accepted. Graduate credits applied to a previous degree cannot be transferred.

Bioinformatics focuses on turning biological data into knowledge to help solve real-world issues. This unique interdisciplinary field is at the intersection of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics, Computing and Engineering.

Data Science and Business Analytics is at the intersection of business, computer and information sciences, statistics, and operations research. Its unique blend of business acumen, data understanding, exposure to a diverse set of advanced analytics methods, and hands-on experience helps students apply technical and entrepreneurial knowledge to real-world business problems.
